All
students in the school DROP EVERYTHING AND READ everyday immediately after
lunch. All members of the school community including office staff,
Principal, teachers ands students will read at this time.
Independent reading gives students opportunities to practise and use the
skills and strategies they have learnt in modelled and guided reading by
providing an uninterrupted time to read silently to themselves. Significant
periods of reading are an essential part of any reading program.
Teachers play a significant role in independent reading by:
-
Ensuring that a range of appropriate and quality texts are available in
the classroom;
-
monitoring each student's independent reading to ensure:
-
that texts are appropriate
-
that students read everyday
-
that students are given the skills to be able to select appropriate
texts
-
by
being a good role model.
Teachers use a process similar to the one outlined below:
-
Child turns over sign on door to inform everyone that they cannot be
disturbed as the class is reading;
-
Students select their reading material and sit at seats - some may choose
other areas of the classroom;
-
Everyone reads. Children do not swap books or share information;
-
At
the conclusion of the session children may be invited to tell the class or
another individual one interesting thing they read.
