Bushcare School
League
The Bushcare
School League is a great program that aims to provide students with
educational environmental experiences by guiding them through the process of
restoring degraded areas.
Led by
experienced horticulturalists (and supervised by Miss Wheatley) this program
will run during Friday Interest Group time between 12:20pm and 1:10 pm each
week beginning in Week 9 term 3 2006. By participating in this program on an
ongoing basis we aim not only to get our Green Zone Garden up and running
but also to learn about biodiversity, sustainability and to learn different
techniques to improve other areas within our school grounds.
I would like
to thank Bankstown Council for coordinating this program and for providing
the materials we will need. If you have some free time on a Friday and would
like to help with this program, or if you have any gardening materials you
would like to donate, please contact Miss Wheatley.
The staff
and students at GHPS are looking forward to reporting to you the progress we
make through our participation in this program. Watch this space!

Green-Zone Garden
In an
effort to become a more environmentally active school (in line with
recommendations cited in the DET Environmental Education Policy For Schools,
2001), Georges Hall Public School is committed to establishing what we will
refer to as our ‘Green Zone Garden’ (GZG).
In order to
make use of this excellent facility, teachers, students and members of our
school community are looking towards developing an area that incorporates
native plants (to attract native wildlife), vegetables/herbs, animals (a
frog pond), a greenhouse (for growing and nurturing plants in), a compost
bin and a water tank.
It is our
goal to ensure that the school’s students take as much responsibility for
the garden as possible and that they be involved in all decisions and
actions from the planning stage, to implementation and maintenance. We
believe that it is through student interest and sense of ‘ownership’ of the
GZG that this project will achieve long term success.

I was very excited to meet the mayor of Bankstown Tania Mihailuk when she
came to our school with a plant donation for our gardening club. I was
really happy when I was chosen to be in a picture with the mayor. She
was really nice. By Nadia, 4W
